Spain & Portugal, Designed Around You

Two countries. One extraordinary journey.

Spain and Portugal are neighbors, but each has a personality entirely its own.

Spain brings the energy of Madrid and Barcelona, the traditions of Andalusia, extraordinary art and architecture, celebrated wine regions, Mediterranean coastlines, and cities where dinner might just be the beginning of your evening.

Cross into Portugal and the rhythm changes.

Lisbon rises above the Tagus in a maze of tiled streets and viewpoints. Porto stretches along the Douro. Vineyards climb the hillsides of one of Europe's most beautiful wine regions. Seaside towns, historic villages, castles, beaches, and centuries of maritime history invite you to slow down and explore.

Experience one.

Or better yet, experience both.

At Sea & Sun Travel Agency, we design personalized journeys throughout Spain and Portugal — bringing together beautiful hotels, rail, private transportation, guided experiences, food and wine, cruises, and all the details in between.

START PLANNING YOUR SPAIN & PORTUGAL JOURNEY

One Peninsula. So Many Possibilities.

Spain and Portugal fit together beautifully.

You can spend an entire vacation exploring either country in depth.

But when time allows, combining them creates something even more memorable.

Imagine beginning among the grand boulevards and museums of Madrid before traveling through historic Salamanca and crossing into Portugal's Douro Valley.

Continue to Porto.

Follow the river and wine country south toward Lisbon.

Or begin on Spain's Mediterranean coast in Barcelona, travel through Madrid and Andalusia, then continue west into Portugal.

Your journey doesn't need to follow someone else's itinerary.

It needs to follow your interests, your pace, and the experiences that made you want to visit in the first place.

Madrid

Grand, energetic and unmistakably Spanish.

Madrid is a city that knows how to live.

Spend your morning among masterpieces in the Prado. Walk through Retiro Park. Explore the Royal Palace. Wander through historic neighborhoods and lively plazas.

Then experience Madrid after the sun goes down.

Share tapas. Find a neighborhood restaurant. Watch the city come alive around you and discover why evenings here have a way of lasting longer than you planned.

Madrid also makes an excellent base for exploring beyond the capital.

Historic cities and towns such as Toledo and Segovia can add another dimension to your time in central Spain.

And because Madrid sits at the heart of Spain's rail network, it's an excellent starting point for a larger journey across the country.

MADRID PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Barcelona | Salamanca | Seville | Rioja | Portugal

Barcelona

Architecture, culture and Mediterranean energy.

Barcelona feels completely different from Madrid.

Here, Catalan culture meets the Mediterranean.

Discover Gaudí's extraordinary architecture, from the Sagrada Família to Park Güell. Wander through the Gothic Quarter. Explore bustling markets. Enjoy tapas and wine before strolling along the waterfront.

But Barcelona shouldn't simply be a checklist of famous sights.

Give yourself time to experience its neighborhoods.

Spend an afternoon along the Mediterranean.

Explore beyond the city into Catalonia.

And if you're beginning or ending a Mediterranean cruise here, give Barcelona more than the night before your ship departs.

It deserves it.

BARCELONA PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Madrid | Costa Brava | Mallorca | Southern France | Mediterranean Cruises

Andalusia

Moorish palaces. Flamenco. Whitewashed villages. Southern Spanish soul.

Travel south and Spain changes again.

Andalusia brings together some of the country's most extraordinary history, architecture, cuisine and traditions.

Explore Seville and its grand plazas, gardens and historic neighborhoods.

Walk through Granada's legendary Alhambra.

Discover Córdoba and its remarkable cultural heritage.

Visit whitewashed hill towns.

Experience flamenco in the region where the tradition developed.

Then slow down.

Order another round of tapas.

Sit outside a little longer.

Let southern Spain happen around you.

Andalusia can be incorporated into a larger Spanish journey or become the focus of the entire trip.

ANDALUSIA PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Madrid | Barcelona | Portugal | Morocco | Mediterranean & Atlantic Cruises

Spain Beyond the Classics

Because there's much more than Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.

Some of Spain's most rewarding experiences happen outside its best-known cities.

Salamanca

Golden sandstone architecture, a beautiful historic center and one of Europe's oldest universities make Salamanca a wonderful stop between Madrid and Portugal.

Basque Country

Bilbao and San Sebastián introduce an entirely different side of Spain — one celebrated for distinctive culture, beautiful landscapes and exceptional cuisine.

Rioja

For wine lovers, Rioja offers vineyard landscapes, historic wineries and the opportunity to make Spanish wine part of the journey rather than simply something ordered with dinner.

Valencia

Mediterranean beaches, striking contemporary architecture, historic neighborhoods and the birthplace of paella give Valencia an identity all its own.

Northern Spain

Galicia, Asturias and the country's northern coastline can create a completely different Spanish journey for travelers ready to explore beyond the traditional routes.

Spain rewards the traveler willing to return.

Portugal

Small in size. Remarkably rich in experience.

Portugal can sometimes be treated as an addition to Spain.

It shouldn't be.

This is a destination capable of filling an entire journey.

Historic cities. Wine country. Atlantic coastline. Castles and palaces. Beautiful hotels. Incredible food. Charming towns and villages.

And perhaps most importantly, Portugal invites you to slow down.

Spend several days in Lisbon.

Travel north to Porto.

Stay among the vineyards of the Douro Valley.

Explore palaces and gardens in Sintra.

Continue south toward the Algarve.

Or venture beyond the mainland to Madeira or the Azores.

Portugal deserves time.

Lisbon

Hills, tiles, trams and the light of the Atlantic.

Lisbon is a city made for wandering.

Historic neighborhoods climb the hills above the Tagus River. Yellow trams make their way through narrow streets. Miradouros open onto spectacular views. Tiled façades bring color to neighborhoods that have evolved over centuries.

Explore Belém and Portugal's maritime history.

Discover Alfama.

Listen to fado.

Taste pastéis de nata.

Take a day trip to the palaces and gardens of Sintra.

Or simply find a table, order something wonderful and watch Lisbon go by.

The city combines beautifully with Porto and the Douro Valley — or works as the beginning or ending of a larger journey through the Iberian Peninsula.

LISBON PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Porto | Douro Valley | Sintra | Algarve | Madrid | Spain & Portugal Cruises

Porto

Historic, colorful and shaped by the Douro.

Porto rises from the banks of the Douro River in layers of colorful buildings, historic streets and viewpoints.

Cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia and discover the port wine cellars that helped make the region famous.

Explore the city's historic neighborhoods.

Cruise beneath its bridges.

Taste your way through local restaurants and markets.

And then follow the river inland.

Because Porto is only the beginning of the Douro story.

PORTO PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Douro Valley | Lisbon | Northern Portugal | Spain

The Douro Valley

One of Europe's great wine landscapes.

Leave Porto behind and the landscape begins to change.

Vineyards climb steep hillsides above the Douro River. Small towns appear along the water. Historic quintas invite travelers to experience the wine, food and traditions of the region.

Stay among the vineyards.

Visit wineries and taste port where it originates.

Travel through the valley by road, rail or river.

Enjoy long meals overlooking landscapes shaped by generations of winemaking.

The Douro can be incorporated into a customized land journey.

Or experienced aboard a river cruise.

For travelers who love wine, beautiful scenery and a slower pace, it can easily become one of the highlights of Portugal.

THE DOURO PAIRS BEAUTIFULLY WITH:
Porto | Lisbon | Salamanca | Madrid | Douro River Cruises

Sintra & The Portuguese Coast

Fairytale palaces just beyond Lisbon.

A short distance from Lisbon, Sintra feels like stepping into another world.

Colorful palaces, historic estates, wooded hills and elaborate gardens have made the area one of Portugal's most recognizable destinations.

Continue toward the coast and the experience changes again.

Seaside towns such as Cascais offer an easy contrast to Lisbon's city energy.

This region works beautifully as a day trip.

But depending on your journey, it can also deserve more time.

The Algarve

Portugal slows down by the sea.

Southern Portugal is known for dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, seaside towns and Atlantic views.

The Algarve can be active or wonderfully uneventful.

Explore coastal villages.

Get out on the water.

Play golf.

Discover local restaurants and beaches.

Or simply stay at a beautiful resort and allow yourself a few days with absolutely nowhere else you need to be.

The Algarve can make an excellent ending after a busier journey through Spain and Portugal.

Explore first.

Relax last.

Spain & Portugal Through Food & Wine

Come hungry. Stay curious.

One of the joys of traveling through the Iberian Peninsula is discovering how dramatically food changes from one region to another.

Tapas in Madrid.

Pintxos in San Sebastián.

Jamón and Manchego.

Fresh seafood along the coast.

Paella in Valencia.

Port wine in Porto.

Wine among the vineyards of the Douro.

Pastéis de nata in Lisbon.

And countless regional dishes most travelers have never encountered before arriving.

Food and wine can be something you enjoy along the way.

Or they can become the reason for the journey.

We can incorporate market visits, cooking experiences, vineyard stays, wine tastings, culinary tours and memorable restaurants throughout your itinerary.

Why Choose When You Can Experience Both?

Spain + Portugal were made for a longer journey.

One of our favorite things about this part of Europe is how naturally the two countries can be combined.

Imagine:

Madrid → Salamanca → Douro Valley → Porto → Lisbon

Or:

Barcelona → Madrid → Seville → Lisbon

Or perhaps:

Madrid → Rioja → Northern Spain → Porto → Douro → Lisbon

You don't have to change countries every two days.

And you don't need to see everything in one trip.

The goal is to create a route where each destination feels connected to the next and where you have enough time to actually experience each place.

Rail, private drivers, flights and carefully planned transfers can bring the journey together.

We'll figure out the logistics.

You get to enjoy Iberia.

Spain & Portugal By Rail and Road

Sometimes the journey between destinations is part of the experience.

Spain's rail system makes it possible to connect many of its major cities efficiently, while private transportation opens the door to wine regions, countryside and smaller destinations.

Portugal offers its own combination of rail and private touring.

And when crossing between the two countries, the best transportation option depends heavily on the itinerary.

That's why we don't build trips around a predetermined transportation method.

We build the route first.

Then we determine whether each segment makes the most sense by train, private car, flight, transfer — or occasionally by river.

The result should feel like a journey.

Not a transportation puzzle.

Cruising to or From Spain & Portugal?

Make the beginning and ending part of the vacation.

Barcelona and Lisbon are important cruise gateways, and Spain and Portugal also appear throughout Mediterranean, Atlantic, Canary Islands, transatlantic and other European itineraries.

If your cruise begins or ends here, don't limit your experience to the night before your sailing.

We can design a pre- or post-cruise stay around your voyage.

Sailing from Barcelona?

Arrive two or three nights early and experience the city properly. Stay longer and add Madrid or another part of Spain before traveling to your ship.

Beginning or ending in Lisbon?

Spend several nights discovering the Portuguese capital, add Porto and the Douro Valley, or build a longer Portugal journey around your cruise.

And if your itinerary begins in Barcelona and ends in Lisbon — or the reverse — you have an opportunity to experience two extraordinary cities while your cruise connects the Iberian coastline between them.

Your extension can be as simple as one or two additional hotel nights with private transfers and touring, or we can design a longer customized land journey before or after you sail.

If you're already flying across the Atlantic for your cruise, why not stay a little longer?

Spain & Portugal By Sea

The Iberian Peninsula looks different from the water.

Cruising offers another way to experience Spain and Portugal.

Depending on the itinerary, a voyage might connect Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Cádiz, Lisbon, Porto and other destinations while continuing toward the Mediterranean, Morocco, the Canary Islands or northern Europe.

Some sailings even travel between Barcelona and Lisbon, creating an almost natural voyage around the Iberian Peninsula.

The ship matters.

But so does the itinerary.

We help you evaluate both.

Premium ocean ships, smaller destination-focused vessels and luxury or yacht-style experiences can create very different vacations even when they're sailing through the same region.

We'll help determine which one fits how you want to travel.

First Time in Spain & Portugal?

Resist the temptation to see everything.

Madrid.

Barcelona.

Seville.

Granada.

Lisbon.

Porto.

Douro.

That's already an extraordinary list.

It's also too much for many shorter vacations.

For your first journey, we might concentrate on Spain, concentrate on Portugal, or combine carefully selected destinations from both countries.

A longer trip gives us more possibilities.

But more destinations don't automatically create a better vacation.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is remove a city from the itinerary and give you another night somewhere you're going to love.

Already Experienced the Classics?

Iberia has plenty left to show you.

You've seen Madrid and Barcelona.

You've wandered through Lisbon.

Wonderful.

Now maybe it's time for:

  • Basque Country + Rioja
  • Andalusia in depth
  • Northern Spain + Portugal
  • Douro Valley + Portugal's countryside
  • Algarve + Southern Spain
  • Madeira
  • The Azores

Or perhaps Spain and Portugal become part of a larger journey connecting the Mediterranean, Morocco or the Atlantic.

There is always another side of Iberia waiting.

When Should You Visit Spain & Portugal?

There isn't one perfect season for the entire peninsula.

Spain and Portugal cover a surprisingly diverse range of climates and landscapes.

Spring and fall can be wonderful for city exploration, wine regions and multi-destination touring.

Summer brings long days, beaches and Mediterranean energy, but also higher temperatures and greater demand in many popular destinations.

Other regions can be appealing at completely different times of year.

That's why we look beyond the calendar.

Where do you want to go?

What do you want to experience?

Do you want beaches, cities, wine country, cultural touring, cruising or a combination?

Your answers help determine when your journey should happen.

How We Design Your Spain & Portugal Journey?

You don't need to figure out whether Madrid should come before Barcelona.

You don't need to determine how to get from Spain into Portugal.

You don't need to coordinate rail tickets, private transfers, hotels, tours and cruise schedules across two countries.

And you don't need to wonder whether you're trying to fit too much into too little time.

We can bring together:

  • Hand-selected hotels and resorts
  • Private and small-group touring
  • Rail transportation
  • Private transfers and drivers
  • Food and wine experiences
  • Vineyard and countryside stays
  • Ocean and river cruises
  • Pre- and post-cruise stays
  • International and regional flights
  • Special celebrations and experiences
  • One organized itinerary

We design your journey around your priorities, pace, travel style and investment — then coordinate the pieces so everything works together.

Your Iberian Journey. Your Way.

Maybe Spain has been calling you for years.

Maybe you've always wanted to see Portugal.

Maybe you thought you'd have to choose between them.

You don't.

Spend your mornings surrounded by art and history.

Your afternoons among vineyards or wandering through old neighborhoods.

Your evenings sharing tapas in Madrid, listening to fado in Lisbon or watching the Douro move quietly through Porto.

Experience one country.

Experience both.

Come back and experience them completely differently next time.

Tell us what you're imagining.

We'll turn it into Spain & Portugal, designed around you.
